Engineers building 6G are adding a feature called Integrated Sensing and Communication, or ISAC. It lets cell towers and routers read the bounce-back of radio waves the same way radar does. A 2024 study on indoor sensing found that a person’s presence can be picked up from a single wireless link with more than 90 percent accuracy, no phone required. That single number explains why privacy advocates are paying close attention now.

This is not science fiction bolted onto a marketing slide. It is a design goal written into technical papers exploring what 6G should do by the time it rolls out near 2030. Researchers describe passive sensing as a way to detect vital signs, falls, intruders, and general human activity, all from reflected radio signals bouncing off a body inside a room.

Vendors Are Already Building And Selling It

Nokia Bell Labs has published its own description of this feature, calling it “network as a sensor.” The company says the network could tell if a vulnerable person has fallen, and could even detect a heartbeat to alert emergency responders. That is a genuinely useful safety pitch for elderly care or hospital monitoring. It is also, whether intended or not, a description of a system that can monitor a body’s most private biological signal.

Qualcomm has gone further, showing the sensing tech in action rather than just describing it. Its 2024 research demo used a rooftop network node to track drones and ground vehicles in real time, flagging when a vehicle entered a restricted zone as an intrusion event. Huawei’s own research papers list human presence detection as a “crucial” target application for 6G design, including tracking multiple people in the same indoor space.

Why This Differs From Ordinary Cell Tracking

Cell phones have tracked location for years through GPS and cell tower pings, but that always required carrying a device. This is different. The sensing method detects a passive human body, meaning someone with no phone, no watch, no tag of any kind, can still be spotted moving through a room. A 2026 demonstration in Turkey reported “robust near real-time indoor human presence detection” by blending cellular and Wi-Fi signals together for better accuracy.

What The Technology Still Cannot Do

Fairness requires noting real limits. The research does not show 6G can reliably identify who a specific person is just from radio reflections. It can tell something the size of a human is present and moving, but not confirm a name or face. Performance also swings wildly depending on the building, materials, and network setup, so a blanket claim of universal indoor spying does not hold up under the current evidence.

The Consent Question Nobody Has Answered Yet

Qualcomm says its sensing work includes authorization, control, and user awareness features built into upcoming wireless standards. That sounds reassuring on paper. But standards documents are not law, and there is little public record yet of regulators, courts, or independent auditors testing whether those consent controls hold up once carriers actually flip the switch on millions of routers and towers.

That gap matters most for parents, older Americans, and anyone who values a locked door meaning something. A network that can already track drones and cars from a rooftop antenna will not stay confined to parking lots and airspace. Conservatives who value property rights and personal privacy should demand clear opt-out rules and independent testing before this tech reaches every home router.

Congress and the Federal Communications Commission have time to get ahead of this, but not much. Standards bodies are finalizing 6G specifications now, years before commercial rollout. Once the hardware ships, retrofitting privacy protection becomes far harder than building it in from the start.
